The ‘Vicolo di Mercurio’ is closed at the far end by one of the towers of the fortifications tenth tower, which repre-sents the last phase of construction just proceeding the siege and conquest by Siila 189 B.C.. Examinations which have taken place in the last few years, after removing part of the ancient embankment, show clearly that the tower was built in a gap in the walls, superimposed on one of the gates of the walls. From the city walls it is possible to see the internal walls, composed of tuff pillars in limestone, marked by Ietters and symbois of the Oscan alphabet. The partiy restored tower offers, from its upper terrace, a superb view of the ruins of the once-buried city, closed in by Vesuvius, the Latteri Mountains and the sea. |
